SANJL 2002 Championship Concludes at Green Pond

A strong west wind off the cliffs at Green Pond, provided a stiff challenge as SANJL concluded its 2002 championship series. Quick and sometimes violent wind shifts forced numerous capsizes and break downs. Sailors had to react quickly as their boats sometimes "auto-tacked" into surprising positions. Stephen Manson finished first overall.

Jim Liggett, sailing fast, turned in a very strong performance and finished second for the day. He was followed by Doug Brown and Derek Jackson. The two sailors matched each other down to the last race, exchanging top finishes to see who would edge out who in this year's series. Rich Mastrangelo continued his fine sailing finishing sixth and moving up to fourth in the overall championship.

The Challenger Fleet was won by Kevin Buruchian (This summer's Junior SANJL Champion). His teammate from Highland Lake, Kevin Murphy (another junior) was not far behind finishing 3rd. George Barrett and Tom Doris upheld the honor of the senior sailors finishing 2nd and 4th respectively. Two new faces joined the winner's circle for the daily trophies. Jim Carter and Thomas Nawrot finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

Susan Mallows was welcomed to her first SANJL regatta receiving the "I sailed award".

A special thanks to Jack Skinner and Kaaren Young for putting on the event, and also to Bruce Cattanach for coordinating the door prizes from local dealers. But the big thank you goes to Derek Jackson who devoted countless hours to make this year's SANJL events a reality. Without Derek, there is no question that some of the regattas would not have happened. He rearranged the schedule and found last minute venues to host regattas when our normal sailing areas literally dried up in the drought.

A rare warm Saturday in late September greeted 30 SANJL sailors to Greenwood Lake and treated them to great day of sailing. In the Championship division, Rich Mastrangelo raced to consistently top finishes. Showing good speed and tactics in conditions that at times baffled his fellow competitors, Rich returned to the top of the SANJL fleet after a several year hiatus. The Challenger Division was won by long time SANJL sailor Frank Blesso Sr.

Much thanks to Bob Krahulik for expertly and single-handedly running the regatta on the water.

Great sailing winds highlighted day two. A cool 15 knot northerly blew down Lake Hopatcong. All 35 competitors had a chance to stretch out their hiking muscles as the race committee set very long windward legs. Much thanks to Woody and the rest of the race committee for their efforts. Also a big thank you to Todd Stevens for organizing the regatta at the last minute.

Again the challenger fleet proved to be successful. This time it was won by junior sailor Kevin Burichian. He grew over the off season and looked very comfortable sailing in the breeze.

A beautiful spring day with 33 boats racing made for picturesque sailing on Highland Lake. Large windshifts and velocity changes keep the fleet guessing. The second race was highlighted by 27 boats finishing in a virtual tie by riding a large puff downwind across a small finish line as an astonished race committee took cover!

The new challenger category inspired many great performances. Nice to see George Barrett (Should he really be in Challenger fleet?) sail a perfect second race to beat the entire fleet. Even with this great race he could not over come Tom Doris who bested the challenger fleet for the day.

Gold Team Sweeps 2002 SANJL Team Race Regatta

Four teams of Sunfish sailors battled light winds in the first annual SANJL team race. Kevin Murphy, Dan Glashauser, Jim Liggett, and Mike Wheeler, (Team Gold) were victorious, convincingly winning all of their matches.

The day began with a discussion of team race rules and tactics. Six very short races were then sailed in light air. The day concluded with a post race talk about experiences and lessons learned on the race course. Awards were then presented to the top 3 teams.

Despite the weather everyone agreed that the event was a success to be enjoyed again next season. It was great to see a very strong junior turn out. In fact junior sailors won most of the races as the seniors elected to battle things out back further in the fleet. We look forward to seeing more of you at the next one.

The 2002 SANJL Junior Champion Regatta was held on Saturday, July 20th at Highland Lakes, NJ. A total of 19 boats competed in beautiful sailing conditions. The fleet comprised both a junior (under 18) and midget division (under 14) and attracted sailors from throughout northern NJ, including Mountain Lakes, Packanack Lake, and Hunterdon.

In a tightly contested dual that came down the final and deciding race, Kevin Buruchian of Highland Lakes held off Nathan Maier of Hunterdon to take the title for the 4th consecutive year. Rounding out the top five were Kevin Murphy (HL), Brian Caine (ML) and Will Landau (ML).

The Midget Division was also very competitive. Caleb Zimmerman was the first Midget. He has established himself as one to watch. His first race ever was the Mountain Lakes regatta on July 6th . He was first midget there, and again at the (club only) junior regatta at Hunterdon. Caleb doesn't even have a boat of his own yet. He has been using club boats and borrowed boats. Not a bad way to start your racing career with 3 age group wins in 3 regattas! Young James Napolitano (HL) thrilled the crowd as he led most of the final race. The nonpartisan cheering helped James place third for both the race and the regatta, with the his teammate Justin Murphy (HL) grabbing the runner-up position.
